The Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is celebrated on September 8, holds a special place in the hearts of Catholics as the Church joyfully commemorates the birth of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Her birth marks the beginning of a life uniquely chosen by God to play a vital role in His plan of salvation. The feast is therefore a celebration of hope, grace and God’s loving providence, inviting the faithful to follow Mary’s example of faith and humble obedience.
At Valencia Church, the celebration began with a solemn procession at 7:10 am from Gorigudda and at 7:15 am from Valencia Circle. Fr Harry SJ blessed the newly harvested corn, symbolising thanksgiving to God for His abundant blessings. This was followed by the traditional offering of flowers within the church campus.
The festive Eucharistic Mass commenced at 7:30 am, with the Parochial Administrator Fr Edwin Correa as the main celebrant. A meaningful homily was preached by Fr Jason Pinto SDB, who reflected on the significance of the feast and the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The Mass was concelebrated by Fr Henry Saldanha SJ Director Asha Kiran Jesuit Residence Pumpwell, Fr Alwyn Crasta SCJ Assistant Parish Priest Valencia, Fr William Barrocas, Fr Arwin SJ and Fr Maxim SJ. The concelebration added to the solemnity and joy of the festive Eucharist as the parish community gathered in prayer and thanksgiving.
Continuing a cherished tradition, Fr Alwyn blessed the new corn and mixed it with coconut roce, which was then shared as part of the festive breakfast. The traditional roce served as a beautiful expression of faith, gratitude, community and the cultural heritage associated with the celebration.
In his note of thanks, Fr Edwin gratefully acknowledged the tireless efforts of the parishioners and the generosity of the donors who contributed to the successful celebration. Their dedication and support helped bring together the parish community in a spirit of faith and fellowship.
The celebration concluded with a joyful fellowship breakfast served to all, bringing together parishioners in a spirit of unity and shared joy. The Feast of the Nativity at Valencia Church was thus celebrated with prayer, thanksgiving, cherished traditions and the warmth of community.
