Women’s Day at Valencia Church: Empowering Women through Awareness

The women parishioners of the parish gathered in large numbers for a meaningful and enriching program held in the golden jubliee hall on 11 April 2026, with approximately 250 women in attendance. The event combined spiritual reflection, health awareness and cultural celebration, making it both informative and engaging for all present.

The program began with the celebration of the Holy Mass at 5:00 pm. Parish Priest Fr Roque DSa celebrated the mass.

Following the Mass, the stage program commenced at 6:15 pm at the Golden Jubilee Hall. The evening was compered gracefully by Rita Menezes, while the prayer song rendered by the Saheli group created a serene and prayerful atmosphere to begin the proceedings.

The highlight of the evening was an insightful session by Dr Joylene DAlmeida, Professor at Fr Muller’s Medical College Hospital, who was the guest and resource person for the program. She delivered an informative talk on women’s health, focusing particularly on obesity and the importance of reducing belly fat through a healthy lifestyle. She emphasized the need for regular physical activity, especially walking and exercise, as essential components of maintaining good health.

Dr Almeida also addressed important concerns regarding cancer in women. She explained the causes and provided a concise overview of breast, cervical, uterine, lung and ovarian cancers. Stressing the importance of early detection, she advised that individuals with a family history of cancer should undergo annual screenings. She also highlighted that women above 40 years of age should undergo a complete health check-up regularly, as it is crucial for early diagnosis and prevention. She further emphasized the significance of the HPV vaccine in preventing cervical cancer, encouraging women to take proactive steps toward their health.

In addition, she spoke about common hormonal conditions such as PCOD and PCOS and gave valuable guidance on how women should take care of themselves both before and after delivery. She highlighted the importance of proper nutrition, regular medical check-ups, adequate rest and emotional well-being during these stages of life.

The session was highly interactive, with many women actively participating and asking questions. Dr Joylene addressed all their queries patiently and clearly, making the session both engaging and enlightening for everyone present.

Adding a joyful touch to the program, cultural performances were presented by the Saheli group and other women parishioners, which entertained the audience and showcased the talents within the community.

Rev. Fr Roque also addressed the gathering, reflecting on the admirable qualities of women. He spoke about their compassionate nature, emphasizing that women possess a greater capacity for kindness and nurturing, which enriches both families and society.

The formal stage program included a warm welcome by  Leena Monteiro, followed by the presentation of the report by  Janet Caldeira. The vote of thanks was delivered by Lucy Leena, expressing gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of the event.

The program was graced by the presence of Rev. Fr Pradeep Rodrigues Assistant Parish Priest, Ronald Rodrigues Vice-President, Leeda Aquinas Secretary, Julian DSouza 21 commissions coordinator of the Parish Council.

The program concluded on a warm and joyful note with a delicious dinner prepared by Patrao Caterers, providing an opportunity for fellowship and interaction among all the participants.
