The 80th Indian Independence Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm and patriotic spirit at St Vincent Ferrer Church, Valencia. The celebrations commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag following the 6:30 am Holy Mass, as parishioners gathered in large numbers on the church grounds to commemorate this significant national occasion.

The Chief Guest for the program was Smt. Shalet Pinto, Chairperson of the Karnataka Ecotourism Development Board.

Addressing the gathering after the flag hoisting, Smt. Shalet Pinto paid tribute to the countless freedom fighters who made immense sacrifices for India’s independence. She recalled their courage, determination and tireless struggle for freedom, urging everyone to remember their sacrifices and reflect on how each of us can contribute meaningfully to society today.

Emphasising the importance of responsibility and service, she said that true strength does not lie merely in personal power, but in fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted to us and using them for the betterment of society. She also highlighted the need to empower women and guide the younger generation towards a responsible and purposeful life by nurturing strong values and principles.

Speaking on India’s cherished ideal of “Unity in Diversity,” Smt. Pinto stressed the importance of living together in harmony with people of all faiths and communities. She called upon everyone to uphold the spirit of unity, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence, thereby contributing to the building of a stronger and more inclusive society.

The ceremony was attended by Parish Priest Fr Cyprian Pinto, Assistant Parish Priest Fr Alwyn Crasta, Parish Council Vice-President Ronald Rodrigues, Secretary Leeda Aquinas and a large number of parishioners.

The program was compered by Belinda Rodrigues. The celebrations concluded on a warm and convivial note, with chicken rolls served to all those present.
